During the past thirty-five years I have made my living as a photojournalist, working for newspapers in the South, Midwest and since 1982 The Philadelphia Inquirer where I work as a photo editor. I got my start in this business while serving as a US Army combat photographer in Vietnam in the late 1960's. My work has evolved over the years from a more or less documentary approach to visual reporting to a more complex and personal way of seeing with the camera. I have come to believe that the camera has the ability to transform and well as report. It is this transformation process that interests me and how I think it has become a vehicle in my search for the spiritual in the world about me.  Zen plays an important role in this belief because I have tcome to believe that when I reach a kind of medatative, no-mind state when working with my camera, the resulting images tend to be more surprising and interesting.
